Well it really is true. You can get sunburnt on a cloudy day. Apparently, you can even get sunburnt on a rainy day. Matt, Mike, and I all arrived home in various stages of wetness after a drizzly weekend of Fathers Day Fest-ing to notice we all had warm, rosy sun-kissed cheeks. Hmmph.
A big thanks to everyone who braved the rain and came out to visit our booth this weekend. It was a lot of fun. Our next festival is a Phinney Ridge event and then the Tacoma Craft Beer Festival this fall. Woo-hoo! See you then.
Well, the time has come. 3 1/2 years after beginning Schooner EXACT, Matt and I are quitting our day jobs. Thursday was the last day of teaching (knock on wood) for a considerable amount of time. While a part of us will miss the kids, the other part is really excited to only have 1 job and be able to focus all our energies on Schooner EXACT. Come celebrate with us this weekend at the Fathers Day Festival at St. Edwards Park.

On Saturday, June 19th the Schooner EXACT tasting room will be closed in order to further celebrate Fathers Day at the Washington Brewers Festival at St. Edwards Park. Come up and join us at the Festival.

Cheers!
Tonight at the Red Hot is a special cask edition of 3-Grid made for our dear friends from the (253). Matt and I will be headed down to partake of some of the goodness. There’s only 10 gallons so you don’t want to miss it. If you are down in Tacoma for the evening, you can also stop by Meconi’s where the regular cask 3-Grid is flowing. Cheers!
Aww, the newest episode in dealing with the city of Seattle, benefits all beer lovers. Saturday, June 12th, construction is occurring at the intersection of Spokane and 1st avenue. Therefore, the only access to Schooner EXACT is from the South on 1st Ave. (See linked map) A large road closed, detour is placed at Dawson and 1st Ave S. Businesses are still open on the stretch of street between Dawson and Spokane, so just drive around the roadblock and come on down to the tasting room to enjoy some beer at Happy Hour Pricing. Saturday hours are 12-7.

We have just procured 80 pounds of raspberries for our annual batch of Seamstress Union. This raspberry wheat is a favorite at the Father’s Day Festival. What’s not to love about a pink, tart but sweet and surprisingly refreshing wheat ale?
This ale is named after the “ladies of the night” living in Pioneer Square back in the day. It was mandated by the City of Seattle that all people hanging around downtown had to show proof of employment/ union affiliation. Hence the Seamstress Union was created. The job description? To provide for the sewing and OTHER needs of the Seattle population.
Give it a whirl at the Washington Brewers’ Festival at St. Edwards Park on June 18, 19, 20th. More info at http://www.washingtonbeer.com/wabf.htm
OK. I realize Schooner EXACT has not been exactly religious about its blog postings within the last six months. Sorry. A lot has been going on but I feel confident that we will be much more on top of it now. In March, our business partner Marcus departed on his own journey to become a beer broker. We wish him the best of luck with his new endeavor.
Marcus’s departure left Matt and I running the business for a few months solo until we hired our first employee, the great Hutch. Hutch most recently brewed at Rogue/ Issaquah Brewhouse. In a nice coming full circle moment, Hutch is now brewing on the same system (with some new mods) that he brewed on at Pacific Crest. We are extremely excited to have Hutch on board as he provides expertise in brewing alternative styles and alleviates Matt of some of his brewhouse duties, freeing him up for sales.
Speaking of sales, today is the second day of employment for our new sales guy Mike Murphy. Mike is out with Matt right now hitting the ground running, already scoring a new account. Mike and Matt will be hitting the Seattle metro area in the upcoming months and we hope to venture into areas previously untouched.
One of the projects occupying much of our time has been the build out of the new location and tasting room. Construction is complete with some final, decorative touches still being doled out. Our tasting room is open on Fridays from 3-7 and Saturdays from 12-7. Be on the lookout in the upcoming months for special events/ happy day specials.
Heather is still trying to rock Tacoma with good beer while fighting beer taxes and initiatives to privatize the Liquor Control Board (initiative. 1100, it’s not as good as it looks, actually quite dangerous to small producers).
Thanks for checking back in with us. We’ll be around much more frequently.
This Wednesday, January 13th, a mere day after my birthday, is a Brewer’s Night at the Parkway Tavern. We have quite the lineup! It came to my attention while creating a flyer, that we are serving all People’s Choice Award Winning Selections. Crazy! We love winning People’s Choice awards since it is primarily the people (not judges) who are drinking our beer day in and day out. Thanks everyone for your support! Here’s the Lineup:
- Hoppy the Woodsman 08′: 1st place – Winter Beer Festival
- Hoppy the Woodsman 09′: 2nd place- Winter Beer Festival
- Hoppy Holidays: 3rd place -Winter Beer Festival 07′
- Best Brewery: Tacoma Craft Beer Festival 09′ (3-Grid, Smith, Gallant Maiden, Regrade Pale, & Hoppy Holidays)
This event will be one of your two chances to taste 08′ Woodsman. (The other one is slated for a very nice taproom in Greenwood, date to be announced..) Matt will be busting out his trivia questions so come prepared with Schooner EXACT knowledge, although some chemical formulas wouldn’t hurt either. Looking forward to seeing you there!
As we expected, Hoppy the Woodsman was a great success just as it was last year. Everyone we spoke to loved it, most even saying that it was better than last year. We tend to agree. It even came away with the 2nd place award for the People’s Choice at the Winter Beer Festival, that is three years in a row that a version of Hoppy Holidays been recognized!
Now that the holidays are past it’s time to buckle down and get our new place up and running. Be sure to keep an eye out here and on our twitter for when our opening day bash will be. Hoping sometime in late January, but we will see how the forces that be treat us the rest of the way through the build-out.
Once we get up and running you keep an eye out for a couple of new offerings from us. Some of you will notice that these will be somewhat similar to a couple of recent limited release beers, and you will be correct! I do not want to give too much away just yet, as we still have some recipe tweaking to do, but some new things are on the way.
Also, be sure to look out for the new issue of Mutineer Magazine hitting the stands any day now!
Thursday night at the Parkway Tavern you will be able to find a most delicious firkin of 3-Grid IPA being served alongside the ever steady Regrade Pale and newly released Smith Beer: a smoked ESB.
If you missed getting a chance to taste these beers at the recent Tacoma Craft Beer Festival, come and give them a try. Or, if you did get to taste them and need another fix, the Parkway is the place!
Cheers!
